'Weird'- Phil Hay discusses Marcelo Bielsa tactics following shock FA Cup defeat

Leeds United suffered an embarrassing loss at the weekend as they were knocked out of the FA Cup at the third round stage by Crawley Town. The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has since given his verdict following the loss.

What Phil Hay had to say

The journalist posted his thoughts on Twitter as he said: ‘With a bit of time to reflect, I don’t think there was a great deal wrong with the starting line-up today. But nobody played well and the batch of half-time subs was weird given the state of the game.’

Leeds need to forget the result quickly

It will always be hard to suffer a defeat against a League Two side, especially with Leeds now in the Premier League, and it was even worse that the game ended 3-0 (SofaScore).

Marcelo Bielsa took off three key players in Liam Cooper, Rodrigo and Pascal Struijk at half time, when the score was 0-0, so it is understandable to see why Hay caledl the substitutions ‘weird’.

It perhaps suggested that Bielsa wanted to give some other players game time and he seemingly believed that even with these players off the pitch, his side could still win. In the end, it was not to be and this will give the manager a lot of food for thought.

It didn’t help that the players he selected for the match did not have their best games. However, the club need to forget the result quickly as they have some tough Premier League fixtures coming up. These games are key as they could give Leeds a chance to battle for a top half finish this campaign.
