SportsReport: Celtic could lose 'peerless' Parkhead man in January on one condition
Premiership giants Celtic could witness the exit of Shane Duffy in January, which could happen on one condition.
Duffy joined Celtic on loan from Brighton in the summer transfer window, but the defender was described as rank-rotten by former Hoops star Kris Commons earlier in the season.
Duffy could leave Celtic
The Sun have reported about Duffy (via 67 Hail Hail), saying that the Irish central defender could leave Celtic this month but only if his parent club, Brighton, can find another loan club for him to join in January. The report states that Brighton want his full wages to be covered by the loan club and that could prove to be a problem, considering that the defender earns £45k per week.
This report comes even after Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy confirmed that Duffy will be staying at Parkhead this month and that he won’t be returned to Brighton.
Duffy has made 18 appearances in all competitions this season and he did score in his first two games of the league campaign. However, he picked up disappointing ratings against the likes of Rangers, Aberdeen, Lille, Sparta Prague and Motherwell.
After his debut, Duffy was praised by Neil Lennon, who said: “Shane, we all know what the club means to him, but to score on his debut was just great. I think after the goal, he just looked peerless, just outstanding.”
Duffy adds depth to Celtic
As things stand, Celtic have four out-and-out options for the centre-back position and this includes Duffy and Hatem Abd Elhamed, who has been linked with a Parkhead exit. While the Hoops were linked with a move for Filip Benkovic, it was reported that the Croatian was going to join Belgian club OH Leuven on loan instead.
Celtic need depth in the centre-back position, especially with Christopher Jullien now out injured and because of that, letting Duffy go at this point will not make sense. Despite his shaky performances, it would likely be better to keep him at the club this month.
