‘There will be no hesitation from Lenny' – Parkhead icon weighs in on Celtic’s ‘special talent’
Former Celtic icon Frank McAvennie has showered striker Odsonne Edouard with praise and has backed him to rediscover his form from last season.
Edouard on fire
The 22-year-old has had a slow start to the 2020/21 campaign but scored a brace for France U21s on Monday to surpass Ousmane Dembele’s goalscoring record for the French youth side.
Despite this, Edouard has only scored six goals from 13 appearances in green and white this term and has struggled with injuries and illness.
The Frenchman played a significant part of their title-winning campaign that helped the Bhoys secure nine-in-a-row with 21 goals to his name (TransferMarkt), which led manager Neil Lennon to describe him as a “special talent” (cited by the Daily Record).
Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie was full of compliments for Edouard, who has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, and believes he can become as prolific as he was last season.
“I think Edouard will kick on now,” he said. “He is a wonderful player but he was trying too hard before the international break.
“As a striker, he is so important to the team. His confidence is based on goals. He looks so laid back sometimes you wonder if he has just got out of bed but what a turn of pace he has got.
“If he is on fire, if he is confident, there will be no hesitation from Lenny. He will put him straight in.”
Transfer Tavern take
McAvennie is spot on. Edouard is the sort of player who plays off his confidence, and there aren’t many young attackers in Europe that are quite as prolific as him on his day.
Lennon must ensure that he is getting the best out of him. While he has struggled with fitness issues, Edouard will be needed for all of Celtic’s big games to come, having found themselves playing catchup to arch-rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.
Edouard is capable of replicating his form from last season. It only takes one game to get your confidence back. His recent experience of international football will have injected him with plenty of it.
