Sports'Never smoke without fire' - Pundit intrigued by update on Leeds target, hints at January move
Leeds have been heavily linked to Glasgow Rangers star Ryan Kent in the past, especially through this summer. He reportedly has a £20 million release clause, but the Premier League side decided not to match that.
The Gers are looking to extend the contract of the £3.15m-valued 24-year-old (Transfermarkt), with him potentially set to move into the top pay bracket of over £28,000 a week. However news of him changing agent has seen former Premier League star Kevin Phillips discuss whether he wants to stay in Scotland.
What Phillips had to say about Kent
Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-striker said: “We have seen it with players swapping agents before. There is a reason when a player swaps an agent.”
“I am still with the same agent I was when I first started the game so the only reason you would swap agents is if you are not happy with them. If they are not doing what you ask them to do which could potentially be that he wanted to move in the summer.
“I am only second-guessing but there is never smoke without fire. There is always a reason a player changes agent so it would not surprise me if something was to materialise in the January window at Leeds or somewhere else. It will be interesting to see how that one unfolds.”
Good news for Leeds?
This campaign, the 24 year-old has managed on average 2.6 shots, two key passes and 2.2 successful dribbles a game (WhoScored) – his creative threat is there for all to see. However it is understandable that Leeds have not triggered the release clause yet as he has only managed four goals and two assists this campaign.
For such a big fee, he needs to be converting a lot more. The fact that he has switched agents could definitely be seen as a positive for Leeds, and if they could get him for cheaper in January, it could really change their season as it would add some directness and creativity to an already potent attack.
