January déjà vu: Liverpool face another battle to keep Klopp's 'door opener'
Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri is once again being linked with a move away from Anfield, reports suggest.
Shaqiri out?
It mirrors events that took place during the midway point of the 2019/20 campaign, where manager Jurgen Klopp rejected approaches from Roma and Sevilla to take the Switzerland international on loan (via BBC Sport).
Despite opting to keep the 29-year-old at Anfield, Shaqiri has not started a game in the Premier League this season and just once in the Champions League (Whoscored), raising more questions about his long-term future on Merseyside.
According to Fotomac (via Liverpool Echo), Galatasaray are keen to take the Liverpool midfielder on a six-month loan move, having watched him on a scouting trip when he took part recently in the UEFA Nations League.
Shaqiri was recently described as Liverpool’s ‘door opener’ by Kop legend Graeme Souness (cited by Football365), but that name could be shortlived if Klopp opts to part ways with the Swiss playmaker this time.
Transfer Tavern take
Shaqiri has been desperately unlucky not to get more game time under the German tactician.
But the sad reality is that Liverpool’s squad is more competitive than it ever has been. With the system that Klopp goes with, there are players who are ahead of Shaqiri in the pecking order in almost every position.
After their investment in the summer, he may have fallen down even further and it would not be a surprise if he did leave the club with the delayed Euro 2020 on the horizon.
In other news, James Pearce provides update on Liverpool’s January transfer plans.
