'He will be sitting on the bench' - Pundit drops hammer blow for Lennon signing at Celtic
Celtic legend Frank McAvennie believes that Neil Lennon will drop Shane Duffy for their Scottish Premiership clash against Hibernian.
Duffy dropped
The 6 foot 3 defender recently completed a season-long loan move from the English Premier League outfit Brighton, but was dropped for the Bhoys’ 4-1 victory against Motherwell despite starting every game beforehand.
Duffy has come under criticism since he moved north of the border, which manager Neil Lennon laughed off as “hysterical” and “ridiculous” (cited by the Irish Times).
Despite this, McAvennie backed Duffy, who Lennon described as “peerless” (via the Irish Times), but believes that he will be axed regardless of if Christopher Jullien is fit enough.
“If Jullien is not back Neil Lennon will keep Bitton in there,” he told Football Insider. “The boy Duffy has come up and his struggles have been well documented.
“I know he is a Celtic supporter but a lot of people think it is easy up here.
“He played a couple of games and scored a couple of goals and he must have thought it was easy but Scottish football is hard. It is not the diddy league that people think it is. You get no time on the ball. People are down your neck.
“He has got to adjust. He will be sitting on the bench and taking it all in because he is a great player and a good pro.
“It has not happened so far and I do not think he will be brought back in yet. When he comes back in I think he will come good.”
Transfer Tavern take
Duffy may have been unfairly criticised after scoring two goals in his first two games, but Celtic’s defeat to Sparta Prague in the Europa League may have been a game-changer in terms of Lennon’s judgement.
The Irish tactician desperately needs to make changes if they are to catch up to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership table.
If his best players are available, Lennon will play them. He cannot afford to take any further risks.
