Well-respected journalist James Pearce has revealed his knowledge of Liverpool’s plans for transfers in January.
Pearce provides January lowdown
The Reds are currently going through a devastating injury crisis in the heart of their defence, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out with serious knee injuries and unlikely to feature again this season.
This leaves Joel Matip as the club’s only established centre-back available for selection. Fabinho can play in that position but this could weaken their midfield. Youngsters Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips have also played their respective parts this season.
Responding to a fan during a Q&A session hosted by The Athletic, Pearce gave his insight into what he knew and admitted that there was no certainty that the Reds would invest again mid-season.
“From what I’ve been told, Liverpool are still considering their options ahead of the January window,” he said.
“No final decision at this stage on whether they will strengthen at centre-back. Ideally, they’d wait until next summer but I do wonder whether that will be taken out of their hands.
“The gulf left by the loss of VVD and Gomez is vast. Coping until the turn of the year is very different from getting right the way through until May.”

While it was reported earlier in the week that Liverpool were unlikely to dip into the market, this will reassure a lot of supporters that it will be considered.
It appears that Klopp, once again, is keeping his cards close to his chest and is allowing sporting director Michael Edwards to work his magic to pull off another masterstroke for the club.
Pearce is right. The season is long once the January window passes and any further injuries at the back could be incredibly detrimental towards their Premier League title defence.
