Celtic transfer target reveals how close he actually was to Hoops move this summer

Celtic were heavily linked with a move for former Bhoys goalkeeper David Marshall, and the man himself has explained how close he was to a return to Paradise.

No return for Marshall

The 35-year-old’s chances of making a return to the club where he made his name looked to have been boosted after his former side Wigan Athletic plunged into administration over the summer (via the Daily Record).

Marshall came through the ranks for the Glasgow outfit and went on to make 28 appearances, keeping 10 clean sheets which led to picking up his first cap for Scotland. As a result, the shot-stopper has gone on to accumulate 38 outings for The Tartan Army (TransferMarkt).

Cited by the Celtic Star, Marshall explains how talks never progressed, which allowed him to join Derby County instead.

“I spoke to Terry Gennoe not that long ago, he only stays about an hour from me in Derby. I think it was Terry who brought Woodsy [Stevie Woods] into Celtic and I have always got on great with him.

“A return to Celtic was never close. I joined Derby, signed for a couple of years and I am really delighted with that.”

Transfer Tavern Take

It would have been an emotional return to the club that he supported as a boy, that initially appeared to be written in the stars after the incident that took place at Wigan.

That being said, it appears that Celtic were perhaps not quite as interested as was reported at the time, which inevitably saw Marshall move elsewhere.

He also managed to get a two-year deal at Derby, which is a good deal for himself and for his new club.

In other news, pundit warns Celtic star about situation that is similar to Ntcham.
