37.5% duels won, possession lost 23 times: £3.6m-valued Gers star struggles at highest level
Glasgow Rangers defender Borna Barisic struggled for Croatia in their UEFA Nations League game against Sweden on Saturday.
Barisic not on top form
The 2018 World Cup finalists were away in Stockholm for their League A, Group 3 clash. Despite the visitors arguably being the favourites, though, it was Sweden who prevailed 2-1. With 13 goals conceded, Croatia now have the leakiest defence in the Nations League this season.
Barisic’s performance against Sweden was very disappointing. He managed to win just 37.5% of his duels, and lost possession on 23 occasions. In fact, his SofaScore rating of 6.2 was worse than any of the other 21 players to start the match.
Hopefully a blip
This is not what Steven Gerrard will be wanting to see from his first-choice left-back. The UEFA Nations League allows players to compete in competitive games at the highest level, with Croatia playing against some of the best teams in Europe – he should be doing better than this.
For the Ibrox outfit this season, he has been in fantastic form, scoring once and providing seven assists in 18 matches in all competitions. He has also been important at the other end of the pitch, with the 54-time Scottish champions shipping just six times with him on the pitch. Gerrard will be hoping that this latest display is just a blip from the £3.6m-valued 28-year-old (Transfermarkt).
