'We don’t work with fear' - Nuno sends defiant message after Wolves' tough start to the season

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo has sent a clear message to supporters by stating that his team will not be lowering their expectations during the 2020/21 campaign.

The west Midlands outfit have been tremendously successful under the Portuguese tactician’s management, getting them to promotion from the Championship and securing back-to-back seventh-place finishes, as well as a place in last season’s Europa League quarter-finals.

However, their poor start to the season has raised concerns about what direction Wolves are taking as a club, having lost two of their three opening games of the new season, which possibly contributed to losing two of their key players in the form of Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota.

Cited by FourFourTwo, Nuno was asked by reporters at his press conference if his side’s expectations should be lowered this season as a result, to which he replied: “No, it’s not about that.

“It’s not about expectations, it is about the work we have in front of us and knowing how to assess it and decide how to move forward. Expectations are outside, we know what we want to do – we want to improve.

“We believe we still have things to improve but we are happy with the squad. It is important that when the transfer window closes that we can reunite and then move on.

“This is how we work. We don’t work with fear, we work with confidence to get things right because making decisions requires a lot of work and time.”

Fans should not forget everything that Nuno has done for the club, so to hear these answers from the manager will be reassuring. That being said, action has to be taken in the transfer market before the window closes if they are to maximise their chances of replicating last season’s successes.

Jota needs to be replaced urgently. With Wolves potentially bringing the Gremio winger Pepe to Molineux, he could be the man that they need to move forward as a squad.

While the signing of Ki-Jana Hoever from Liverpool isn’t a like-for-like replacement for Doherty, the Dutch youngster may be the best that Nuno can hope for. Let’s see if Wolves have a trick up their sleeve before Monday’s deadline.
