Steven Gerrard's Rangers handed major Europa League opportunity after latest reveal
Glasgow Rangers have found out who they will face in the Europa League Group Stages.
After beating Galatasaray 2-1 on Thursday night, the Gers will have been waiting with anticipation to see who they would face in the next round of the competition. On Friday, it was confirmed that they will face Benfica, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan.
Steven Gerrard could hardly have asked for a better draw. Granted, Benfica are likely to be a difficult opponent – this is the first time since 2009 that they will not be in a Champions League group, and they have won European football’s premier tournament on two occasions – but the fact they are in this competition at this stage says they are arguably not the team they once were. Liege and Poznan, meanwhile, are two sides that the Ibrox outfit will hope they can get past with relative ease, even though they have 10 and five league titles to their names, respectively.
All three sides are teams that the Gers have not played against in recent seasons, which makes it more interesting for supporters, although they will likely be massively disappointed that they cannot travel to any of the away grounds. Last season, Gerrard led his side to the Round of 16 – looking at this group, he should be confident of repeating that feat this term.
