SportsReport: Levy's bid to sign ‘natural leader’ for Tottenham dealt huge blow after Serie A update
Writing for Goal, Serie A correspondent Romeo Agresti has claimed that Juventus will not let Tottenham target Merih Demiral leave Turin this summer, dealing a blow to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s hopes of landing the centre-back ahead of a congested 2020/21 Premier League campaign.
Demiral, who was seen by Spurs as a serious alternative to top target and fellow defensive ace Milan Skriniar, is now off the table following Juventus’ rejection of an approach, with the Old Lady determined to keep him at the Allianz Stadium.
Indeed, as per this update, Juve still have faith that Demiral will play a key role under new manager Andrea Pirlo despite some drawn-out fitness issues over the last two years, citing his promise and return to the team as a key factor.
According to WhoScored, over the matches that he did play during 2019/20, Demiral averaged an impressive 92% passing accuracy whilst winning 3.3 aerial duels per game – more than any of Spurs’ natural defensive options.
Having already managed 13 caps at international level for Turkey, the 22-year-old is seen by Juve as a real star for the future despite his injury problems, prompting them to rebuff an approach from Levy and Tottenham.
Given that Spurs and Inter are locked in ‘complicated‘ negotiations over star defender Skriniar, a capable fallback option like Demiral would have been comforting given his reputation as a ‘natural leader‘.
The centre-back also has a slender market value that could have been in the ballpark of Levy’s transfer remit, with the 6ft 3 colossus currently estimated to cost around £24.3m.
As a result, this update could come as a blow to Spurs as manager Jose Mourinho looks to add more defensive depth before deadline day on Monday.
