PL club outline intentions over 'phenomenal' £100k-a-week ace amid potential Newcastle interest

Newcastle United could have to pay around £20m to sign Manchester United defender Phil Jones in January, with the Red Devils willing to cash in on the Englishman.

Steve Bruce’s side had been linked with a potential move for Jones during the summer transfer window, with the Magpies having been in the market for a new defender. It was reported that Newcastle had made an enquiry to the Old Trafford club for the 28-year-old in the summer, which came after missing out on Arsenal’s Rob Holding, as per The Telegraph.

Man United offering firm stance despite lack of first team minutes

It has been reported that Jones is amongst the players that Newcastle could try to sign in the winter transfer window. Bruce could reignite his interest in the 28-year-old, despite having some reservations over the defender’s record with injuries over the last few years, as per Chronicle Live.

Manchester United are prepared to cash in on Jones, despite the defender having only signed a new deal worth around £100,000-a-week last year. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would demand a fee of around £20m for the former England international, according to The Sun.

Jones has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and is not thought to be in Solskjaer’s plans, while the 28-year-old is keen to make a move away to get more regular first team football to try and revive his England career, as per The Sun.

Jones would be an expensive gamble

For a fee of £20m, Jones would represent a gamble for the Magpies, who spent that amount on marquee summer signing of Callum Wilson. The Magpies also brought in Jamal Lewis, who is six years younger and has plenty of room for development for just £15m.

Jones only made two league appearances last term and just 15 starts in 2018/19 due to injury and the form of others, as per Sofascore. It therefore seems a steep price tag for a player clearly far down the pecking order at Old Trafford. However, having once been described as ‘phenomenal’ by Sir Alex Ferguson, it could be a gamble worth taking if Bruce believes in the defender.
