“Newcastle is bigger than Everton” - Former LFC star risks the wrath of Toffees with NUFC praise

Former Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique has offered a passionate response to the takeover saga around the club, with the Spaniard insisting that the Magpies need to be a top-six team.

Newcastle were the subject of a £300 million takeover move by a Saudi Arabia-based consortium over the summer. However, that was curtailed though by the consortium pulling out of the deal due to the length of time the Premier League was taking in sectioning the takeover, per Chronicle Live.

Newcastle’s long-term ownership situation still unclear

Despite the takeover not being completed over the summer, it is still being reported that Mike Ashley is keen to sell the club. There is still hope the situation can be resolved with the consortium having now agreed to pay 10% more than they had originally agreed to purchase the club, per Sunderland Echo.

That though will be dependent on the outcome of a legal appeal from Ashley and also the success of further talks between both parties before the New Year, per Sunderland Echo. Despite the takeover saga Newcastle did spend around £35 million in the summer, having also invested in Joelinton and Miguel Almiron in previous windows.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, Enrique outlined that Newcastle need new ownership to go to the next level. He cited Everton as a potential model to follow looking at how they are progressing since the summer. The former full-back also expressed his desire to see the club get back into the Premier League’s top six where they belong.

He said: “Every Newcastle fan, obviously, was really excited by the takeover, because it would have been an owner with a lot of money that maybe wanted to put Newcastle where they deserved to be.

“I still believe Newcastle is a top-six team. Look, Everton is there, and it’s not because I’m a Liverpool fan, but Newcastle is bigger than Everton for history, for everything. It should be a top-six team. I believe that.

“Newcastle needs to be a top-six team. That’s the reality. I’m not sure if it needs to change owner or what has to happen, but it needs to be a top-six team.

“They have renewed the contract of (Allan) Saint-Maximin. For me, he’s the best player. They’ve renewed his contract and spent in the summer. This summer has been a bit strange, but the summer before they spent as well.

“Steve Bruce has proved he’s a very good manager for the club. But everyone was talking about Mauricio Pochettino, someone like that (as manager). Obviously, you need to give the chance to Steve Bruce and see how he does.”

Enrique comments will be echoed by all Magpies supporters

The former defender spent around four years with the Magpies when Ashley had just taken over at St James’ Park. As a result Enrique witnessed the changes in the club that led to two relegations.

There have been signs of an improvement in terms of the ambition to invest in the squad in the last few windows. However, the club will not be able to make any real progress until the ownership changes. As Enrique says, Newcastle were dreaming of that change in the summer and having a manager like of Pochettino in charge. At the moment, the club is very far away from that situation.
