'It’s possible’ - Jose Mourinho drops Tottenham hint as deadline day looms

Speaking at a press conference (via Football.London) following Tottenham’s resounding 7-2 Europa League win over Maccabi Haifa, Lilywhites manager Jose Mourinho has hinted that it is ‘possible’ that some players will leave before deadline day, with the likes of Serge Aurier, Paulo Gazzaniga and Ryan Sessegnon tipped to make way.

Tottenham have enjoyed one of their most active transfer windows in recent memory, having officially snapped up a plethora of acquisitions before deadline day tomorrow.

Indeed, the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius have all put pen to paper, with another defensive signing potentially on the way.

Mourinho has now dropped another transfer hint that some Spurs players are likely to make way for all these new arrivals, whether that is on loan or in a permanent deal.

Claiming that the transfer window goes in two different directions, the Portuguese may be right in saying that it is necessary for Spurs to offload given the current size of their squad and potentially huge wage bill.

“The transfer window goes in two directions and it’s possible that we could let a couple of players to leave, it’s possible we could let a couple of young players to go and experience playing,” he explained to reporters.

“For sure, we are not going to keep every player in the squad over normal numbers. I like to work normally with a squad of 22 players plus the keepers and we are not going to be far from that number.”

Aurier, who is deemed to be surplus to requirements at Tottenham with the arrival of Doherty, was close to a £15m move to Spartak Moscow move according to Football Insider, but the transfer collapsed due to his determination to remaining in Europe’s top five leagues.

Meanwhile, Ryan Sessegnon will spend the season on loan with Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim, first reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Given a recent £175m bail-out from the Bank of England, as revealed by The Athletic, Spurs certainly cannot afford to lose much more in terms of revenue, with the only question being who is now most eligible for the chopping block.

More players will likely follow Sessegnon out the exit door in the next 48 hours, as Mourinho looks to fine tune a squad surely now equipped with the quality and depth to win silverware.
