‘Fantastic talent’ – Hutton tips Villa teen with ‘awful lot of potential’ to make first team

Former Aston Villa star Alan Hutton has high hopes for youngster Jacob Ramsey and believes he can challenge for first-team places this season.

Ramsey trusted by Smith

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder was heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park this summer with a number of clubs interested in taking him on a season-long loan.

However, Dean Smith blocked those respective approaches as he sees the Englishman as part of his plans in the senior side for the 2020/21 campaign.

Ramsey, who has been a regular for Mark Delaney’s U23s team, has scored eight goals and provided seven assists from 27 appearances, which recently helped him in earning his first cap for the England U20s, as per TransferMarkt.

With all of these events in mind, Hutton told Football Insider that he thinks Ramsey can step in the shoes of any offensive first-team player and hailed his player development so far.

“I think it actually shows how highly Dean Smith rates him,” he said.

“If he’s not willing to let him go out on loan, that’s because he wants to use him this season. I’ve seen him kind of grow up as a player, in that Bristol City game he went from a boy to a man, if you like, from what I saw when I was at the club.

“He’s really grown in stature as well and he looks really confident. He’s obviously seen enough in him in training that he can push the midfield players, or even the attacking players, that are there to come in and do a job.

“On one hand you would like to see him go out and play regular football, I think obviously that would do him good, but it shows you how highly they rate him, that if they’re keeping him there, they’re going to use him. It’s good for him but we want to see him play, he’s obviously a fantastic talent so hopefully, he can get a chance.”

Pressure is off

Ramsey will be delighted that he is getting the chance to strut his stuff in the Premier League. While he may feel like the pressure is on, he has nothing to lose.

Villa are in a good place right now. Unbeaten in the league and second in the standings and Smith may soon be rolling out the red carpet for Ramsey to give him the opportunity that he feels he deserves.

Ramsey’s recent performances suggest that he does indeed deserve the chance, with the English tactician describing him as a player with “an awful lot of potential”.

In other news, Joleon Lescott accuses key figure of having ‘personal’ problem with Aston Villa star.
