English club prepare new contract for £4m-valued Rangers target to fend off Steven Gerrard
According to Football Insider, Preston North End will offer Daniel Johnson a new contract to fend off interest from Glasgow Rangers.
Preston want Johnson to stay
Johnson was heavily linked with a move to Ibrox during the summer transfer window but a move never materialised, with the Championship side unwilling to accept the 54-time Scottish champions’ £1.5m offer.
The 28-year-old has not played a single minute for the Lilywhites in the league this season but, with him having just eight months left on his contract, they are eager to tie him down to a new deal.
Blow for Gerrard
This would no doubt be a blow for Steven Gerrard. The Rangers boss was looking for a new midfielder during the summer and, although he did manage to bring in Bongani Zungu, he does not fit the bill of a creative midfielder. This is something many think the ‘Gers need, including club legend Brian Laudrup.
Last term, Johnson was in fantastic form for Alex Neil’s side – he scored 12 goals and provided a further eight assists. Chris Humphrey, who played with the Jamaican for the Lancashire outfit, called him “phenomenal” and said he would be “unreal” in the Premiership.
Whilst £4m would have represented a large outlay, this is a player who could give Rangers that extra bit of vision. It remains to be seen whether Johnson is eager to commit his long-term future to his current employers.
