Bielsa reveals that seven-goal star is seen as Bamford's potential replacement

Marcelo Bielsa has revealed that Tyler Roberts is the Leeds United player who is in line to replace Patrick Bamford should the striker suffer an injury or fatigue.

Bamford has been much the preferred option for Bielsa as the central striker in Leeds’ starting eleven, appearing in 45 Championship games last term and all five of the Yorkshire club’s Premier League games thus far this time round.

Having spent just under £100m over the summer transfer window, the Argentine coach seemingly signed Rodrigo Moreno from Valencia a second striker but the Spanish international has played in a much deeper role of late for the Whites.

Whilst Bamford is not injured and is expected to keep his place for Friday’s tie with Aston Villa, Bielsa has opted to discuss his squad options with a reporter asking him about them during his Wednesday press conference.

Bielsa picks Tyler Roberts as backup to Bamford…

“The squad is not small because we have two players per position,” Bielsa told reporters. “And, there are not big differences between the two players who occupy each position.

QUIZ: Can you name these 10 players that have been signed by Leeds since Marcelo Bielsa took over?

“Just to make a reference, for example, we have Bamford and Roberts up front, Rodrigo and Pablo in attacking midfield. Poveda and Costa, Raphinha and Harrison [on the wings].”

Can Leeds fans feel confident with Roberts as back-up to Bamford?

Roberts has been utilised in either a front man role or in the attacking midfield areas during his time at the club.

However, just seven goals for Leeds in 59 games for the Whites will undoubtedly leave Elland Road fans slightly concerned about him being the second choice.

It does seem that Bielsa has very little intention of playing Rodrigo Moreno in the striker role but that could mean Leeds do look for a new goal-scorer come January, especially if the worst were to happen and Bamford picks up an injury.
