'They do tend to draw a lot', 'Do they have enough firepower' - TT predicts Brighton v Arsenal

Brighton return to Premier League action this afternoon as they welcome Arsenal to the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls are currently 15th in the table and just two points clear of the relegation zone as they face a battle for their top-flight future. Without a league win so far in 2020, they play host to a Gunners side reeling from their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in midweek.

Graham Potter’s team were struggling before the coronavirus-enforced stoppage of the season, winning just one of their last 14 league games, although they have already beaten today’s opponents in 2019/20, recording a 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium in December.

Also, while Brighton have almost a full squad available, Mikel Arteta must contend with several absences through injury and suspension, particularly in defence. Furthermore, Arsenal have lost and drawn on their two previous visits to the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls could ease their relegation worries and further dent the Gunners’ European prospects if they do the double over the London side, although defeat for Potter’s team would hand an incentive to West Ham, Watford and Aston Villa, all of whom are beneath them in the table but play either later tonight or tomorrow.

Ahead of this afternoon’s clash in Falmer, some of the Football Transfer Tavern team have given their predictions as to the final score:

Liam Togher

Brighton should take encouragement from their fine record against Arsenal in recent seasons and could also be helped by the litany of injuries and suspensions afflicting the Gunners, for whom the pressure to get into Europe has intensified after Wednesday night.

The Seagulls would probably have been grateful for the postponement of the season given the form they showed at the start of 2020 but they still have some daunting fixtures to come over the next few weeks. With neither team in the best of shape, I can see the spoils being shared at the Amex Stadium.

Prediction: Brighton 1-1 Arsenal

Jack Maleham

This is a tough game to call. Whilst the league table clearly shows that Arsenal are the better side, they are ravaged by injuries and suspensions, particularly at the back with David Luiz and Pablo Mari now ruled out.
Brighton will be desperate to get something as they look to edge closer towards Premier League survival, but they have only won once at home in their last eight league outings. They do tend to draw a lot at the Amex, with three of their last four Premier League matches at home finishing level.
Added to that, Arsenal have drawn five of their last six away matches in the PL, so all things point to another draw here.

Prediction: Brighton 1-1 Arsenal

Adam Clancy

Arsenal will be looking to bounce back fast, and Brighton could be the victims of that. Having played competitively recently, they will likely be sharper, and the Gunners were unbeaten away from home in 2020 before the Manchester City game. Aubameyang will be hungry having not made an impact.

Prediction: Brighton 1-2 Arsenal

Luke Seychell

Brighton need to start picking points up as soon as possible, but I do not see the Gunners being as complacent as they were in their last fixture agains them and, after their recent thrashing against Manchester City, they will be more determined than ever to beat Brighton. With this in mind I believe Arsenal will win the game.

Prediction: Brighton 1-2 Arsenal

Tom Ward

Although they were eventually hammered by Man City, Arteta had actually set his side up quite well, and he shouldn’t be held accountable for defensive mistakes that were completely out of his control. On the other hand, the ‘Gulls desperately need to find some points from somewhere, but I do not think it will be easy for them on Saturday.

Do they have enough firepower to take advantage of Arsenal’s frailties at the back? I don’t think they do, and the Gunners will be looking to prove a point at the weekend, so I’m predicting Arsenal will win 2-0.

Prediction: Brighton 0-2 Arsenal
