"Not massively suited to Roy Hodgson’s style" - Athletic journalist drops verdict on ex-CPFC ace
The Athletic journalist Matt Woosnam does not believe that Michy Batshuayi thrived in Roy Hodgson’s system at Crystal Palace last season.
The 73-year-old’s final season at the club ended with the Eagles finishing in the mid-table mediocrity of 14th.
Batshuayi made 18 appearances in the Premier League last season, with the Belgium international ending the campaign with just two goals.
They came against West Ham United in a 3-2 defeat and against Everton in a 1-1 draw, the latter in a six-minute cameo.
Batshuayi only made seven starts at Selhurst Park and he made just two appearances in the final 14 games of the campaign, and was not even in the squad for the clash with Liverpool on the last day of the season.
He has subsequently returned to Chelsea without a permanent deal being struck and his current contract expires in 2022.
Still, Football.London has reported that Batshuayi is available for transfer this summer and there is one Premier League club interested in signing him.
But Woosnam felt he endured a remarkably poor season in south London last term.
He said: “Perhaps not massively suited to Roy Hodgson’s style but I just don’t think he performed particularly well last season at all.”
