Serie A expert Conor Clancy has warned Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters that transfer target Rafael Leao could prove to be an expensive flop if he completes a move to Molineux.
Wolves head coach Bruno Lage, who has replaced Nuno Espirito Santo in the dugout during the close season, is looking to improve his attacking options ahead of the window closing at the end of the month.
Portuguese striker Leao, who is currently on AC Milan’s books, is on Lage’s radar. According to Calciomercato, Leao’s agent Jorge Mendes has offered the frontman to Wolves. The report suggests the Italian giants would be willing to do business if a €30million (£25m) bid was lodged.
Leao scored seven goals in 40 appearances last term and also contributed six assists.
His arrival would potentially take pressure off Mexico international Jimenez, who scored his first goal since fracturing his skull last November in the 1-1 pre-season friendly stalemate against Stoke City at the weekend.
Forza Italian Football editor Clancy believes Leao would fit in well at Molineux, but he is unsure as to whether the 22-year-old would prove to be a success.
He told The Transfer Tavern: “He does seem like a bit of a Wolves signing in that Raul Jimenez hadn’t been amazing everywhere he had been before he went to Wolves. He then went to Wolves and has been amazing.
“I’m not sure it would be one of Wolves’ better signings if he were to go there.
“But if he did go and grow, I wouldn’t be overly surprised either.”
