Negotiations 'will start next week' - Everton star now wanted by European giants
AC Milan have expressed an interest in signing James Rodriguez from Everton, according to Colombian outlet Win Sports TV’s Pipe Sierra.
The lowdown
Everton brought former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich superstar James to Goodison Park on a free transfer last September.
He finished the season second only to Gylfi Sigurdsson in the Blues’ assist ranks, and was also their fourth-highest scorer with six goals (via BBC Sport).
James has a year left on his contract, though Everton do have the option to extend it for a further 12 months.
However, Carlo Ancelotti, who reunited with the Colombia international on Merseyside, has of course left to join Real Madrid.
The latest
Sierra reports that AC Milan have made their interest known to James’ representative Jorge Mendes.
The Serie A giants, set to play Champions League football again in 2021/22 after an eight-year absence, are expected to start negotiating with Everton ‘next week’.
“AC Milan is interested in the Colombian midfielder James Rodríguez (29) and has made it known to his representative Jorge Mendes,” Sierra claims, translated via Twitter.
“Negotiations with Everton they will start next week.”
The verdict
It would be a little surprising if James was still an Everton player come the start of the season, because you’d imagine Ancelotti was a big reason he joined in the first place.
If he was to leave, there would probably be mixed emotions among the fanbase. When he played, James was largely very good and showcased his top-tier creative abilities.
But he only featured in five of the Toffees’ last 14 matches with persistent fitness issues, and that has to be a real worry going forward with a new manager coming in and seeking players they can rely on.
In other news, this influential figure says Everton have been keeping tabs on a prolific striker.
