Diego Costa has been named as a potential option for Newcastle United in this month’s transfer window by ex-Premier League star Dean Windass.
Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, the former Hull City, Bradford City and Middlesbrough striker was asked which clubs he thinks could be good options for the now free agent to join during this window and he named Newcastle as a possible club, claiming that manager Steve Bruce would like to work with a forward in the mould of Costa. He answered:
“Steve Bruce, at Newcastle, he likes that type of centre-forward”.
Costa could be a good signing for Newcastle
Costa could well be a good signing for the St. James’ Park faithful if they were to decide to swoop in for his signature, given that he is currently a free agent and, therefore, would not cost a penny in terms of a transfer fee.
The only problem that the Tyneside club would possibly face is trying to meet his wage demands, but for what he could offer to the Magpies, it could be a shrewd bit of business.
As Windass points out, Bruce likes to have a striker with a physical presence, exemplified by his uses of the likes of Andy Carroll, and Costa certainly fits in that mould, having been previously described as a ‘beast’ by his old Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone.
The striker would also offer some valuable experience in terms of where he has played and what he has won previously, having scored no fewer than 52 goals and making a further 18 assists in 89 games in three consecutive seasons in the Premier League while playing for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (Transfermarkt).
It would certainly be an ambitious move by the Toon given his pedigree, but the 32 year-old may still have a lot to offer, and Windass believes that it could be a good move to make, if the finances made sense for the Magpies.
