"Hammond was watching": Journalist reveals Celtic scouting trip for possible centre-back signing
Premiership giants Celtic, namely Hoops Head of Football Operations Nick Hammond, may have recently scouted Declan Gallagher, according to The Athletic.
Gallagher happens to be a Celtic fan and it has been reported that he could well be pushing for a Motherwell exit soon, as his current deal at the club runs out at the end of the campaign.
Hammond watched Motherwell recently
The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin had recently reported about the club’s potential interest in centre-backs now that Filip Benkovic seems to be heading elsewhere. In a Q&A session with Celtic supporters, Devlin revealed that Hammond was recently watching Motherwell take on St. Mirren in the Premiership this past weekend. He also went on to state that there is a possibility that Hammond could have scouted Gallagher in the game.
The journalist said: “Hammond was watching Motherwell’s game against St. Mirren on Saturday. Presumably for Declan Gallagher, who wouldn’t be a good signing in my opinion.”
This comes days after the Scottish Sun had reported that Hammond had indeed watched Gallagher in a game recently.
In the current campaign, Gallagher has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Motherwell. He has scored once and that goal came against Celtic themselves (as per Transfermarkt).
BBC pundit Gary Holt has already showered Gallagher with a lot of praise and said: “I used to say we were fortunate to have players who were prepared to get hurt in both boxes. He’s prepared to get hurt. That’s what you like about him. He’s somebody who’s going to do his job to the best of his ability. He’s kicked on massively since he left Livi.”
Gallagher could be a good signing for Celtic
Gallagher has made 21 Premiership appearances for Motherwell this season and he has picked up a rating of 6.92. He has been the club’s third-best rated player in the campaign (as per Whoscored).
This suggests that he is a quality defender and since he is a Celtic fan, he might want to play for the Bhoys too – a little passion could go a long way in this sorry Hoops defence. Hatem Abd Elhamed has been linked with a Parkhead exit and if he leaves, Celtic may need another defender. Gallagher could certainly be that man.
