95.9% pass accuracy: Liverpool eyeing 6 ft 3 potential VVD successor who is "pouring energy"

Liverpool reportedly see Merih Demiral as a defensive target, but the Turkish defender remains the ‘hardest dream’ for the Reds to achieve.

It has been reported by Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb that Liverpool are looking at multiple options to shore up their backline in January. While the report mentions names like Mohamed Simakan, Sven Botman and Schalke’s Ozan Kabak, it also talks about Juventus star Demiral.

At 22 years of age, the former Sassuolo starlet could be a long-term partner for Joe Gomez once Virgil van Dijk is past his prime.

Demiral is the ‘hardest dream’ for Liverpool

The report states that Jurgen Klopp is expecting the club to give him defensive recruitments this month, because of the injuries sustained by Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. Demiral is also reportedly seen as a potential option by the Reds, but he has been described as the ‘hardest dream’ for the Anfield-based side.

Liverpool were recently linked with a move Demiral, but Fabrizio Romano had later tweeted that the Turkish defender isn’t looking to leave the Bianconeri at this point of time.

The 6 foot 3 defender has made 11 appearances for Juve this season. Most recently, he featured for the club in a 3-1 win over Sassuolo (as per Transfermarkt).

He was described by Maurizio Sarri as a player who is “pouring energy” and he averages an insane 95.9% passing accuracy in Serie A, so would fit in at Anfield, where teams often sit back and allow the Reds plenty of possession.

Demiral is one to keep an eye on

While Romano has reported about Demerol’s situation being stable, a report in his native Turkey had recently stated that he isn’t happy with his playing time at Juve right now. It stated that Demiral wants to star for his country in Euro 2020 later this year and to make that happen, he wants regular first-team football.

This suggests that Demiral’s situation is something that Liverpool might have to keep an eye on. Considering the injuries to Van Dijk and Gomez, Demiral could get the desired first-team spot at Liverpool and prove he belongs at the elite level.

Furthermore, given that he is just 22 and already playing for a title-challenging and Champions League chasing side, he could be more than just a replacement for Van Dijk – he could be his successor.

In other news, many Liverpool fans have been talking about an update regarding their young starlet – read more here.
