‘That didn’t please me’ – Neil Lennon reveals concern for ‘ferocious’ Celtic asset
Celtic manager Neil Lennon was not happy with Scotland boss Steve Clarke over his use of Ryan Christie during the international break.
Lennon not impressed
The 25-year-old played a key role as the Tartan Army qualified for their first major tournament since 1998 after beating Serbia on penalties, scoring the crucial goal for them during normal time.
Despite this, Christie also featured against both Slovakia and Israel, which both ended in 1-0 defeats (Fotmob).
Speaking to Sky Sports, Lennon was not impressed with Clarke’s decision to play Christie in every minute of their three games, who was described as “ferocious” by Celtic icon Chris Sutton (via Daily Record).
“He didn’t rest Ryan. That didn’t please me,” he said. “It was three 90 minutes in six days which is a big ask for any individual.
“Steve tried to balance the squad as best he could but it looked like he didn’t want to play without Ryan. I can’t be overcritical but we would have liked him to miss some of the games.”
Lennon continued: “He is important to me, he is important to my team, he is important to the club, my squad.
“He is in a good place. He has been up and down a little bit with his consistency and form like many others, so I am hoping now we will see a real rich seam of form from him.
Transfer Tavern take
With Celtic currently playing catchup to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, Lennon will want all of his first-team players being as fit and as fresh as possible.
Christie may have to be wrapped in cotton wool for the game against Hibernian and for the next few weeks to avoid injuries.
That being said, the Irish tactician may opt to play Christie anyway and take the risk, but it is certainly a concern that such a key player could become overworked at such a crucial time.
