‘Catch 22’ - Levy could be forced to sell 'perfect' Tottenham star who 'Mourinho loves'

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Noel Whelan has claimed Spurs and manager Jose Mourinho could be forced to offload star winger Erik Lamela at the end of the season if Daniel Levy opts against a new contract – especially if the club want to profit off his signature.

Lamela, who has featured regularly under Mourinho this season but is currently on the sidelines recovering from injury, signed for Tottenham back in the summer of 2013 from AS Roma – becoming part of the player influx brought in to reinforce the squad after Gareth Bale’s departure.

Lamela dilemma

The Argentine, whilst often attracting mixed reviews from supporters over his stay in north London, has also attracted praise from Mourinho since he was appointed at the end of last year.

Jonathan Liew, writing for the Guardian, described his tenacious South American style as ‘perfect‘ for Mourinho’s new look Spurs side – but now the club face having to offload the 28-year-old with his contract expiring at the end of next season.

If Levy does not offer the player a new deal, Spurs could lose him for a meagre fee or nothing at all, with this year arguably being the best time to ‘cash in’ if a new contract isn’t signed.

As a result, Spurs now face a ‘catch 22’ situation with Lamela, and Whelan has claimed his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium may be coming to an end.

Whelan drops claim

“He’s been at Tottenham a hell of a long time now, Erik Lamela, and he’s always been one of these players that is a go-to from the bench,” explained Whelan to Football Insider.

“Now he’s the sort of player that, on his day, can be a world beater. He can score great goals, he’s fantastic with the ball on the deck, great pace, good eye for a pass.

“It’s a catch 22 situation. If he’s desperately needed by Jose Mourinho, then they should think about getting a new contract on the table for him. If he’s not in Jose Mourinho’s plans and they feel they want a fresher person in that position, then you do have to cash in. It’s as simple as that.

“Lamela has still got a lot to offer a football team and could get regular game time so you’ll get more money from him now then in another year’s time.

“If you want to get some money for him the best way would be to cash in at the end of the season.”

Transfer Tavern take

The player’s contract situation means Spurs do have a dilemma when it comes to his future, especially if they want to recuperate some of the large fee invested in bringing him to Tottenham.

Time will tell whether Levy is in fact forced to offload him at the end of this season, but without a new deal, he may have no other choice – with Tottenham now facing the possibility of losing a player ‘Mourinho loves‘.
