‘They let themselves down’ - EPL winner slams Celtic and £8.55m-valued ace after defeat to Milan

Celtic started their Europa League group stage with a 3-1 defeat at home to Italian giants AC Milan, who currently sit top of Serie A.

The Hoops will be disappointed with some of the goals they conceded and may feel they could have been prevented. Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, a three-time Premier League winner, had his say on their performance, and he believes defender Shane Duffy could have done a lot better.

What Keown had to say about Celtic defender Shane Duffy

Speaking on BT Sport via Daily Record, Keown said: “That ball into the box (for the first goal) should have been attacked better, there’s no doubt. Here (the second goal) the defending’s really poor. They’ve got to get tighter, Duffy is standing off too much and they get in each other’s way.

“Okay, it’s gone through the player’s legs but Diaz putting that away in far too much space. It’s Hernandez running from deep – he’s the full-back.

“The amount of space he had, I just felt they let themselves down defensively. But they changed it at half-time and the second half performance was a whole lot better.”

Could Duffy have done better against AC Milan?

Valued at £8.55m by Transfermarkt, Duffy arrived on loan from Premier League side Brighton in the summer and had a good start to his Hoops career as he scored two goals in his first two games. He also only conceded only one goal in these fixtures and he has been part of five clean sheets in nine Celtic appearances thus far (Transfermarkt).

However, in the AC Milan game and also their Old Firm loss to Glasgow Rangers, the defence have shipped five goals, a worrying dip in form which leaves them playing catch-up in two competitions.

Keown’s criticism of Duffy is fair as the 28-year-old picked up a 6.3 Sofascore rating, the third-worst rating out of the Celtic starting XI. The Irishman lost possession ten times and lost three ground duels and two aerial duels (SofaScore).

Hopefully this was just a one-off, although the centre-back now has a point to prove in their upcoming Premiership fixture against Aberdeen.
