Sports‘Something more serious’ - Sky pundit hints at ‘underlying issues’ with Tottenham outcast
Speaking to Football Insider, Alex McLeish has hinted that ‘something more serious’ could have developed behind the scenes between Danny Rose and Tottenham as the club seek to offload him.
Rose, who has been omitted by manager Jose Mourinho after failing to secure a move in the summer, now faces life on the fringes of first team football until January at least.
Rose running out of time
The postponed Euro 2020 is looming just next year and the 29-cap England ace will be hoping to move somewhere either on loan or in a permanent deal to work his way back into Gareth Southgate’s plans.
McLeish, who occasionally does punditry work for Sky Sports, has had his say over the Rose development, hinting in an exclusive interview with Football Insider that there could be ‘something more serious’ as well as a difference in opinion between the player and Mourinho.
“There seem to be underlying issues,” McLeish told Football Insider.
“I’m only reading between the lines, I’m not au fait with everything that goes on inside Spurs or indeed the players’ minds.
“I’m looking from afar and see the little tittle-tattle that’s maybe developed into something more serious.
“For about a month or two there you thought his time at Spurs was definitely finished, definitely over. The powers that be at Spurs weren’t too fussed about holding onto him.
“I know there was a contentious issue about him there would he be leaving on a free transfer.
“At the end of the day, Danny Rose has to do what’s best for himself. I know that when you’re at a football club that club comes first but Danny will now be at a stage of his life where he has to do what’s best for himself and his family.”

Despite becoming a mainstay under former manager Mauricio Pochettino, playing regularly during Tottenham’s run to the Champions League final in 2019, the 30-year-old has failed to convince the Argentine’s successor.
After going out on loan to Newcastle United last season, he impressed in flashes but seemingly not enough to warrant a permanent deal from the Magpies.
Indeed, as things stand, Rose’ future at both Spurs and in the national team look questionable at best.
