Aston Villa beat Everton and Manchester United to capture highly-rated defender

According to The Courier, Aston Villa are set to beat both Everton and Manchester United to capture the services of young Dundee United defender Kerr Smith.

The 15-year-old centre-back has been attracting a lot of interest in recent weeks from Premier League sides, despite the fact that he is not old enough to sign a professional contract.

With the transfer window due to close in three days, clubs across the country will be scrambling to get those last-ditch deals over the line before the cut-off point.

Having already made several high-profile signings such as Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez and Ross Barkley, Villa are also looking to the future by bringing Dundee United’s talented defender to Villa Park.

The club have seen a number of players come out of Bodymoor Heath over the years. Most notably Jack Grealish who made his debut for the Villains back in 2014 against Manchester City, as per TransferMarkt.

On the subject of their facilities, the club is undergoing a £14m renovation of their training ground, which will be an ideal environment for young Smith to develop his talent.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Carlo Ancelotti were keen on securing his services, The Courier revealed that Dean Smith has pipped them both to the post.

Having been converted into a centre-back from a central midfielder during his development, his performances has been good enough to see Villa make a move for him.

It’s an interesting move for Villa to make at this stage of the transfer window, in what can be considered as a successful period for the manager.

The addition of Smith illustrates his intent to focus on the future of the club, which could provide him with a pathway to regular Premier League football in the future.

Of course, this is all hypothetically speaking. Smith will have to prove that he can cut it in England’s top tier, and if he does, he will eventually be rewarded with his first deal with the club.

While he is highly-rated in Scotland, he has a lot to prove south of the border.
