‘A joy to watch’ – Rival club icon waxes lyrical over ‘unbelievable’ Liverpool star

Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has been speaking about Liverpool winger Sadio Mane and his performance during the Reds’ 1-0 victory against Ajax on Wednesday evening.

Van Persie is a fan of Sadio Mane

An own goal from Nicolas Tagliafico just before half-time was the difference between the two sides on the night, with the hosts unable to break down an injury-struck Liverpool squad.

The Senegal international only featured for 60 minutes before he made way for Diogo Jota in the second half, but played a big part in helping break the deadlock.

While he didn’t see out the game, he left a big enough impression to receive credit from Van Persie, who spent three years at Old Trafford, adding to Jamie Redknapp’s comments last season when he described Mane as “unbelievable”.

Speaking to BT Sport (21/10, 10:10 pm), Van Persie was complimentary with his words about Mane and thoroughly enjoyed watching him play at the Johan Cruyff Arena, despite adding that Liverpool were fortunate to pick up the three points.

“For me, in the first hour, it was a joy to watch Mane,” he said.

“His movement, how he holds up the ball, his link-up play. I would pay to watch him. He’s a fantastic player to watch.”

Mane’s true class illustrated

This is something that we have often seen from Mane since he arrived from Southampton for £34m in 2016, as he has gone on to enter the top 20 all-time record goalscorers at Anfield having found the net 85 times.

The Senegalese winger even attracted praise from multiple Ballon d’Or-winner and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, who expressed his disappointment that Mane did not pick up the award after helping the Reds win the Champions League in 2019 (via Liverpool Echo).

His consistency over the years has been remarkable and, with Liverpool’s injury list growing as the weeks pass, Klopp will be hoping that Mane is not added to it during the 2020/21 campaign.

In other news, fans criticised James Pearce after comments he made about Anfield flop.
