Hong Kong-based businessman wants to buy Sunderland; Donald should sell - Opinion
Former footballer and now businessman Sammy Yu has said that he is still keen to takeover Sunderland from current owner Stewart Donald.
The controversy and dramatic life on and off the pitch at the Stadium of Light has been clear to see for football fans via Netflix series Sunderland Til I Die.
A large part of Sunderland’s recent history and the aforementioned series has been the ownership and tenure of businessman Donald, who revealed just 19 months after taking over that he wanted to sell the Wearside club.
With a second successive season failing to gain promotion to the Championship from League One, Donald’s time at the club has now come under even more scrutiny and takeover talk is now re-emerging.
Yu, who used to play football for the Hong Kong national side, has reiterated his desire to potentially take over the club having had previous talks with former owner Ellis Short.
Speaking to Sunderland Echo, the business owner said: “It was about three or four months ago, just before the outbreak.
“At the time he said that they had a deal done with someone else so we said ‘okay, fair enough.
“I also spoke with Charlie and he named some of the criteria of a possible deal – but since then, nothing has happened. There has been no information, no communication at all.
“In fact, that was the first time we’d got as far as talking, but we never really got into anything to be honest.
“For Sunderland, me and my group are always interested.”
Yu, who is part of many businesses also acts as Managing Director at Eastern Sports Management Ltd, whilst also holding a number of business interests in local newspapers.
The relationship between the Sunderland fans and Donald is strained to say the least. Indeed, following pressure from certain fan groups, the owner put the club up for sale back in January (BBC Sport).
If Yu’s interest is genuine, it may be the best thing for all parties that Donald sells the club to the Hong Kong-based businessman so that everyone can move on. The 2020/21 season is huge for the Black Cats who will try to win promotion from League One at the third attempt, surely it would be for the best to do that with a fresh start under new ownership rather than having a black cloud still hanging over the Stadium of Light.
