'Devastating' - Sunderland striker laments 'awful' situation at former club

Sunderland striker Will Grigg has opened up about the situation surrounding former club Wigan Athletic, who have entered administration.

With the Championship season tentatively resuming last month, clubs at that level are said to be treading carefully with finances.

Second-tier club Wigan, have been forced into administration with a 12-point deduction handed out by the English Football League currently being appealed. The Latics sit 15th in the Championship table as things stand and will await to hear the results of their appeal to discover whether or not they will survive relegation to League One.

Grigg, who has struggled to adapt to life at Sunderland since his arrival in January 2019, revealed his dismay at the current situation at the club that he left for Wearside 18 months ago.

“The news is obviously devastating for everyone involved,” he is quoted as saying by Wigan Today.

“Obviously there was a takeover four weeks ago, you get the excitement of a new owner, and then to see what’s happened since is awful.

“I’ve still got a great relationship with players, staff and people who work at the stadium, who work their socks off and love the club with all their heart.

“I’m hopeful and confident it can be resolved, and they can find the right owner who can take the club forward to where it deserves to be.

“But for the moment, it’s a really tough time for everyone involved.”

Grigg’s comments come off the back of his thoughts on his Sunderland future, claiming that he is committed to the cause at the Stadium of Light.

Grigg’s comments about the travails of Wigan should serve as a warning to Sunderland, who themselves have been no strangers to financial uncertainty of late.

It was only a few weeks ago that football finance expert Kieran Maguire warned of a £20.5m gap in the balance sheet, which has been linked to a sum of money written off by owner Stewart Donald and his fellow shareholders as an ‘exceptional operating expense’, therefore making him highly unlikely to repay that money. Wigan’s plight should prompt Sunderland and other League One clubs to tread very carefully in terms of their finances.
