SportsReport: Latest government stance on Newcastle takeover revealed which may encourage fans
The latest stance from the British government on the proposed takeover of Newcastle United has been revealed as The Guardian have reported that they have apparently told human rights groups that there are grounds for cautious optimism with regards to social reform and modernisation in Saudi Arabia.
Indeed, as per The Guardian, the kingdom has been criticised for its record with human rights as well as Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman’s (MBS) possible involvement in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, of which his fiance Hatice Cengiz has been publicly critical.
MBS is one of the leaders of the buying side as he is using his country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to try and fund the prospective deal with Mike Ashley, and he has also been aided by businesswoman and head of PCP Capital Partners Amanda Staveley and the London-based Reuben brothers.
If the Premier League deem the human rights record of the Saudis to be unacceptable, in addition to deeming that MBS was indeed involved in the murder of Khashoggi, then it could seriously put the £300m bid at risk as the English top flight will not likely want to be associated with this. However, England’s highest division could also choose to overlook this if the would-be owners are deemed to be both fit and proper as per their owners’ and directors’ tests.
It is not yet clear as to whether the relatively appalling human rights record of Saudi Arabia will play a part in the league’s decision, but the fact that the government have been talking about the approval of the takeover with cautious optimism could be a big step towards seeing the deal go through at St. James’ Park.
