Report: Gers receive £7.5m boost as they surge ahead in race for 24-goal ace
According to Football Insider, Glasgow Rangers have surged ahead of their fierce rivals Celtic in the race to sign Ivan Toney, with Peterborough only really looking for half of their £15m price tag.
The Gers had previously been linked with a move for the striker, but Posh owner Barry Fry says that the 24-year-old would cost any prospective buyer £15m (The Daily Mail via The Scottish Sun).
Celtic and West Brom have also been mentioned, and this latest report says that it is the Ibrox outfit and the Championship side who are leading the race. Not only that, the report adds that Toney will be much cheaper than the price the League One outfit are looking for – maybe even around just half.
As the Gers look to close last season’s 13-point gap at the top of the Premiership table to the Bhoys, they continue to look for reinforcements who could really add something to Steven Gerrard’s starting XI – Toney is no doubt a player who could do just that. Before the League One campaign was brought to a premature close, he scored 24 goals in 32 games – more than any Gers player could manage in Scotland’s top tier before that too was ended early.
£15m would have been well beyond what the Gers could afford, and whilst £7.5m is still far from cheap, it at least indicates that there is some room for negotiation. With West Brom closing in on Premier League football as they sit in second place in the Championsihp, the 54-time Scottish champions do still certainly have a fight on their hands to convince him they are the better choice, but having Celtic out of the picture is no doubt a boost.
