Newcastle must avoid signing £26m-valued takeover target who Alan Shearer slammed - Opinion
Newcastle United must avoid signing Marcos Alonso after there were various reports linking the Chelsea man with a move to the North East after the proposed takeover at St. James’ Park is completed.
According to the Daily Star, Alonso faces an uncertain future under Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge and thus the Magpies are reportedly interested in obtaining his signature in the upcoming summer transfer window.
With an abundance of riches expected to be at the hands of the would-be owners, it is arguable that they may be more than happy to splash the cash on the left-back if needed.
The Daily Mail have also reported that Alonso would cost £26 million, given that he still has three years left on his current contract with the Blues.
The Daily Mirror (via the Daily Mail) have claimed that the 29-year old is already on the shopping list of Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabia-led consortium should the prospective deal with Mike Ashley be eventually approved by the Premier League.
Alonso has a wealth of Premier League experience, but Alan Shearer has highlighted his flaws before. In his column for The Sun back in 2018, the Toon legend said that Alonso leaves space behind when he bombs forward, which could leave NUFC particularly vulnerable to counter attacks.
In addition, the club currently have three left-back options available to them at the moment, and if Danny Rose makes his loan move from Tottenham Hotspur into a permanent transfer, then Alonso may find himself crowded out in this role.
At 29 years of age he is not getting any younger, and so £26 million for a man who will likely cost a lot in terms of wages as well would be a deal that Newcastle should look to avoid at all costs.
