'Absolute machine' – Ex-PL boss hails 'unplayable' Wolves youngster who is 'like Saint-Maximin'

Former Premier League manager Alex McLeish has been speaking about Wolves winger Adama Traore and his transformation from a player that “had no brains” into one of the most wanted players in European football.

Traore the ‘machine’

The young winger has been hugely impressive at Molineux since his £18m move from Middlesbrough during the summer of 2018 – their first season back in the Premier League since 2012.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp described the Spaniard as “unplayable” when the German came up against him last season, attracting the interest of some of the top clubs in Europe, including the Reds (via the Mirror).

Despite this, Nuno Espirito Santo retained the services of Traore for this season in what is a big campaign for the club, as they try to close the gap to the top six.

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish, who was in charge of both Birmingham City and Aston Villa in England’s top flight, spoke about Traore’s growth as a player and compared him to a familiar figure in the North East.

“He has been thrilling to watch, like Saint-Maximin at Newcastle. They remind me a lot of each other,” he said.

“Traore was kind of seen as a guy who ran and ran but had no brains but look at the
transformation of that guy.

“He is an absolute machine and everybody wants him now, all the big clubs. Barcelona
obviously had him so obviously that potential was there, and now he is producing it.”

Unorthodox star

Traore is a unique player – his unorthodox style of immense strength and explosive pace has caught many of the top managers off guard, particularly Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola during the 2-0 win against them last season.

After selling Diogo Jota to Liverpool in the summer for £41m, there was a danger that the West Midlands outfit would lose several of their key personnel. But having used those funds to invest back into the first-team squad, Wolves are in a good place despite their slow start to the season.

Whatever happens going forward, Traore will be a key part of either Nuno’s success or failure this season, and the Portuguese tactician will be counting on him to deliver.

With three years left on his current deal, Wolves have stood firm and done the right thing in keeping hold of one of their key influencers.

In other news, fans questioned Nuno Espirito Santo’s use of Wolves star.
