Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a late transfer move for Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke, according to Football Insider.
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is seemingly keen to find a new striker option to add competition for Harry Kane during the current transfer window.
The Portuguese tactician saw his side concede a 97th minute penalty to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon to be held to a 1-1 draw in the Premier League.
With many transfer rumours currently doing the rounds in England, one has now emerged from Football Insider, who claim Benteke is a target for Mourinho.
The report goes on to add that Spurs have seen moves for Alexander Sorloth – who joined RB Leipzig – and Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik collapse this window.
Benteke, 29, who currently is on the books with Palace, only found the back of the net twice for Palace last season in 24 appearances.
The Belgian international is valued at £9.45m by website Transfermarkt but it is thought a deal for Spurs would be slightly less.
This is a strange transfer rumour but one that could make sense. Mourinho wants to find a back-up striker and Benteke could certainly be just that.
Given his recent record it is likely that he would accept playing second fiddle to Kane and he could be a Fernando Llorente-esque signing for Tottenham. Indeed the Spaniard was the back-up option at Spurs for a couple of years and had a great physical presence, standing at 193cm tall and listing aerial duels as a main strength.
Benteke, who was once described as “exceptional” by former boss Paul Lambert, is just shorter at 190cm (6’2″) but is also extremely strong in the air and could give the north London outfit a different option from the bench. With a market value of less than £10m too, this could be an affordable option for Daniel Levy.
